1. Who this policy covers
This Privacy Policy applies to the Musamma mobile application. References to “Musamma,” “we,” “us,” or “our” mean the developer of the Musamma app.
2. Information we process
Musamma processes the following information only when needed to provide its features:
- Your account. You sign in with Google. We receive your name, email address, profile photo address and a Google/Firebase user ID. They are used to identify your account, show it on the Account screen, and keep your backup separate from other people’s.
- Your learning choices. Why you are learning Arabic, the Arabic you chose to learn (Fusha or a dialect), and, if you chose “Living or moving to an Arab country,” the country you picked.
- Your vocabulary. Your stickers (the cut-out images of objects you scanned), their Arabic and English names and example sentences, the words you save, the lists you make, and the dates you added them.
- Musamma Pro. If you subscribe, Google Play takes the payment and we never see your card or payment details. Our subscription provider, RevenueCat, receives your Musamma user ID and your purchase and subscription details from Google Play (which plan, its dates and its status), plus basic device and app information, so that Pro unlocks on your account on any phone. We keep your Pro status with your account.
- Words you search for. When you type a word into “search a new word”, the text you typed (up to 60 characters) is sent to our processing service, which uses Google Gemini to make an Arabic learning card from it. It is used only to answer that search; it is not stored with your account or written to our logs. If you save the word, it becomes part of your vocabulary and backup like any other word.
- AI stickers (Musamma Pro). When you tap Generate sticker, we record which word’s sticker your account used that month (the word’s English name and the month) to count your monthly stickers. If you rate a sticker (thumbs up, thumbs down or Report), we store your answer with your Musamma user ID so that each account counts once.
- Scan, search and sticker counts. We store how many scans and word searches your account made each day and each month, how many AI stickers it used and made each month, and the day of your first scan, to apply the free daily limit and the Pro monthly allowance.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications, Google Firebase Cloud Messaging delivers our news and updates to your phone, using an identifier for the app on your phone. We do not store it on our own servers or link it to your account. You can turn notifications off in Account or in Android settings.
- On-device live detection. Live camera frames and object-selection boxes stay on your device and are not uploaded.
- Still photos you choose to submit. Only the selected still is uploaded after you tap an object or the shutter.
- Photos you choose from your gallery or share to Musamma. Musamma sees only the one photo you pick in Android’s photo picker or share to it from another app; it cannot browse your photo library and does not request storage or photo permissions. A copy of that photo is kept in the app’s private storage while you scan it; the copy does not include the photo’s location or other camera details. The objects in it are found on your device, and it is then handled like a camera still: the object you choose is uploaded to complete the scan, or a smaller copy of the whole photo when you choose “Use the whole photo” or no single object is found. Your original photo is never changed or deleted.
- Basic request and diagnostic information. Our hosting provider may process information such as IP address, request time, endpoint, response status, and error details to operate, secure, rate-limit, and troubleshoot the service. When you are signed in, the app also sends a short-lived sign-in token so we can apply usage limits to your account rather than to your network; it is checked and not stored. We do not intentionally place full photos or full vocabulary payloads in application logs.
- On-device detection diagnostics. Google ML Kit may send limited device and app information, per-install identifiers, performance metrics, API configuration, feature sizes and versions, event types, and error codes to Google for diagnostics and usage analytics. Google states that image input and object-box output stay on-device and are not included in this metrics data.
Musamma does not request contacts, precise location, microphone access, your card or payment details (payments are handled by Google Play), or the Android advertising identifier.
3. How we use photos and learning data
A small crop of the selected still is used to identify the object and to generate beginner learning text in the Arabic you chose (Fusha, or an Egyptian, Gulf or Levantine dialect) with its English meaning. The area around the object you selected is used to remove the background, and the AI also reports where the object sits in that crop so hands and surfaces are left out. If that fails, the cutout is made on your device, or as a last resort from the full selected still. Camera video is never uploaded.
AI stickers. Stickers for searched words are made by an AI image model (Google Gemini) from the word’s English name only; nothing else you typed and nothing about you is sent to the image model. Each picture is checked automatically before it is used and is kept in a shared library, so other learners who search the same word see the same picture. The library does not record who asked for a picture. AI stickers are labelled “AI sticker”. Use Report under a sticker to tell us it is wrong or inappropriate; stickers reported by several learners are taken out of use automatically.
Your account, learning choices, lists and vocabulary are used to provide the app: to show your stickers and words, to name new scans in the Arabic you are learning, and to back them up so they come back when you sign in on another phone or reinstall the app.
4. Service providers and data transfers
To complete a scan or a word search, the app sends the photo or the word you typed, and the minimum necessary request data, over HTTPS to our private processing service. We use infrastructure and AI service providers, including Google Cloud and Google Gemini, to host the service, identify the object, and generate learning content.
Sign-in and backup use Google Firebase: Firebase Authentication for your account, Cloud Firestore for your vocabulary and learning choices, and Cloud Storage for your sticker images. These providers process data on our behalf to deliver the features you use.
Subscriptions use Google Play Billing and RevenueCat, which processes your user ID and purchase details on our behalf to confirm whether you have Musamma Pro. Notifications use Google Firebase Cloud Messaging.
For live on-device object boxes, Musamma uses Google ML Kit. ML Kit encrypts its limited diagnostics and usage metrics in transit; Google states that it does not transfer this metrics data to third parties.
Processing may occur in countries other than the country where you live. We do not sell personal or sensitive user data, and we do not share it for advertising.
5. Storage and retention
- On your device: your vocabulary, learning text and sticker files are stored in the app so they open instantly, also offline. If a cutout is unfinished, the source still may remain in private app storage for up to 24 hours so processing can resume, then it is deleted. Signing out keeps them on the phone; signing in with a different Google account removes the previous account’s vocabulary from the phone (it stays in that account’s backup).
- In your backup: your stickers, words and learning choices are kept with your account until you delete them in the app or delete your account. Deleting a sticker or word removes it from your backup too.
- Searches and AI stickers: the word you type is used only to answer that search and is not kept on our servers. The record of which words’ AI stickers your account used is kept for about two months, to count the monthly allowance, and is then deleted automatically; it is deleted straight away when you delete your account. Your sticker ratings are deleted when you delete your account. Stickers in the shared library are not linked to you and stay in the library.
- Scan, search and sticker counts and Pro status: your Pro status is kept with your account while it exists, to unlock Pro, and deleted when you delete your account. Scan, search and sticker counts (how many you made each day and month, with no photos or words) are kept with your account while it exists and for 30 days after you delete it, so that deleting and re-creating an account cannot be used to get around the free limit; they are then deleted automatically. RevenueCat keeps its record of your purchases under its own retention until we ask it to delete it, which we do when you delete your account.
- On our processing service: the photo you submit is used only to complete that scan. The area around the object may be held in the service’s memory for up to 90 seconds so the cutout can reuse it, and is then discarded; it is never written to disk. Temporary generated image files expire automatically, normally within 30 minutes.
- Operational records: limited request and error metadata may be retained for a limited period under our hosting provider’s logging configuration for security and reliability.
6. Your choices and deletion
Camera access is requested only for the scan feature, and notification permission only for our news and updates. You may deny or revoke either permission in Android settings, and turn notifications off in Account. Choosing or sharing a photo needs no permission and gives Musamma only that photo. You can delete any sticker or word from its screen, and you can change the Arabic you are learning in Account at any time.
Deleting your account. In the app, open Account and choose Delete account. After you confirm with Google, Musamma deletes your backup (stickers, words, lists and learning choices), your Pro status, the record of AI stickers you used, your sticker ratings, your customer record with RevenueCat (your scan counts follow within 30 days), your Musamma account, and everything the app stored on your phone. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it in Google Play (Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions) so you are not charged again. You can also request deletion without the app: see how to delete your Musamma account.
7. Security
Production requests are encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Your backup is stored under your account and can only be read or changed by you when signed in. We limit access to backend credentials, restrict upload size and request rates, avoid logging full user vocabulary payloads, and remove temporary generated files automatically. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.
8. Children
Musamma is intended for learners aged 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through the app, contact us so we can investigate.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app or its data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will identify the latest version. Material changes will be reflected in the app or its store listing where appropriate.
